My Opinion of Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was an African- American slave in the Americas in the Mid- 1800’s. He was an intelligent man who realized the evils of his masters. He worked for years in order to be in a position to run. At this point, he had to change his name in order to stay safe.
He wrote about his experiences, and had to run away to England. He must have been a very courageous man, and really believed that he was doing the right thing.
As stated, he was a very intelligent man, learning to write and read only knowing the most basic of the alphabet.
Because of this, he was a very prominent speaker for abolition and Women’s Rights gatherings and conventions. He was a skilled orator, and his speeches were always memorable.
One Fourth of July, he delivered the speech at his hometowns celebration. He said that he was inapt to do it, since he wanted nothing with a country that said they wanted liberty, and yet kept people in bondage.
He was brave and should be recognized in history as a picture of the American Spirit.

You summarize Douglass accurately and eloquently.
ReplyDeleteWe should talk about the brilliance of Douglas, but also the ways, IMHO, he acquiesced to the power structure, securing benefits for himself while leaving his brothers and sisters in chains. Like all of us, Douglas was a mixed bag. On balance, far more good than bad.
