Where Historians Disagree:
~ Slavery was romanticized
~ Ulrich B. Phillips "American Negro Slavery" put slavery as a practice where kind masters looked over contented African American slaves.
~ 1941- Melvil J. Hopkins challenges Phillips idea that black americans retain little african heritage.
~1943- Herbert Aptheker publishes a chronicle of slave revolts.
~ "The Peculiar Institution" (1956, Kenneth Stamp) & Stanley Elkins "Slavery" described slavery like a work- prison. And Psychological Scars
~ 1970's- shifted to African Americans latter success.
~ 1988- Elizabeth Fox- Genovese's "Within the Plantation House" talked about how black women were workers and important to the family.
~ Recent years- Character of Slavery
Very good analysis.
